Maari Ma

Maari Ma Aboriginal Corporation

Maari Ma is a community controlled health service that exists to make a life changing difference to the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people in the far west of New South Wales. As they approached their 30th anniversary, they wanted a way to share their story of success far and wide. We couldn't have been more honoured to help.

The brief

Maari Ma is not just a thriving and successful health service, they are a true example of the power of self-determination. While they already had lots of documents, ads, and a social media presence, they were looking for another way for the full Maari Ma story to cut through locally and to a broader audience.

The answer was to create two video animation pieces that brought their story to life in an emotive and compelling way.

The good

Creatively, we were inspired by the Sturt Desert Pea that appears in the Maari Ma logo (and grows everywhere locally)  to create a visual narrative theme that runs across both videos.

The first video explores the connection between past and present contributions Maari Ma has made to the Broken Hill community. This connection is explored through the metaphor of the Sturt Desert Pea seed, its resilience and ability to thrive under harsh desert conditions. The connection between the past and present is explored through the seed being passed down from generation to generation, as well as a split screen effect, with characters from different generations interacting as shadows / reflections of each other, highlighting the important role legacy plays in the community.

The second video looks to the future of Maari Ma and the services available for parents and children and their positive impact, represented through the flourishing Sturt Desert Pea flowers appearing throughout scenes of community. We call back to the legacy of Maari Ma (as represented in Video 1) through the use of a split screen effect, with characters from different generations interacting as shadows / reflections of each other.

The impact

Beautifully emotive, the videos have been embraced by the community (we may have even seen a few tears shed when they were first screened). Together, they provide a fitting tribute to an outstanding organisation. Here’s to another 30 years!

Generations of characters were brought to life.

The Sturt Desert Pea provided a metaphor for strength and resilience.
