Keeping sacred sites alive through technology

Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies

There are so many culturally significant and sacred Aboriginal sites peppered around Melbourne that you could spend days wandering and discovering. We worked with the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) to make these sites more accessible through an app — Melbourne Dreaming.

The brief

Based on the book Melbourne Dreaming, we helped make Melbourne’s Aboriginal cultural and sacred sites more accessible. The brief was to create an informative, user-friendly and multi-layered app that would take users on a self-curated journey.

The good

Carbon Creative designed and developed the app, released for Android and iOS mobile devices, encouraging users to explore Indigenous sites and immerse themselves in the culturally-rich experiences and history scattered around Melbourne. It’s the ‘choose your own’ adventure that goes back 60,000 years.

The impact

Our creative approach focused on delivering an app that celebrated Aboriginal culture with a modern and contemporary design, while ensuring an accessible, informative and user-friendly experience. By teaching, discovering, and learning, we can continue as a nation towards reconciliation.
