NRL Brisbane Broncos

NRL Brisbane Broncos

In 2023, for the first time in their history, the Brisbane Broncos faced competition for loyalty from the new local team, the NRL Dolphins. As part of their push to remind Brisbane-ites that the Broncos were the true local team, they came to Carbon to help create a new Welcome to Country video that would tell the story of our home, and remind everyone of what unites us.

The brief

Founded in 1987, the Brisbane Broncos were the first Queensland-based team to be invited into the National Rugby League competition. Since then, the Broncos have been one of the most successful clubs in the NRL, winning seven men’s premierships and four women’s (including the latest for both teams in 2025). They are one of the most watched, and have one of the highest average attendances, of any rugby league club in the world.

Following the admission of the Dolphins, Brisbane’s second rugby league team, into the competition in 2023, the Broncos wanted to reclaim “Brisbane” and their rightful position as the city’s iconic and dominant sporting team.

The good

Part of that push included the development of a new Welcome to Country celebration to be played before home games. We knew this was a unique opportunity to highlight the fact that Meanjin/Brisbane has always been our place and that, no matter where you live in that place, there is one thing that unites us on Yarraman (horse) Country… the Broncos.

We did this by creating a welcome that features the story of the spirit Birralee and the creation of the mighty Maiwar (Brisbane) River. Splitting Meanjin in half, the Maiwar brings us all together — just like the Broncos. Featuring Traditional Owner, Shannon Ruska, and visual effects created by 3P Studio, the welcome is a rousing and heartfelt welcome to “our home”.

The impact

Debuted in the final home games of the 2025 season, we like to think this Welcome helped to galvanise the crowd to push the team to a season win. Go Broncos!

Visual effects brought the sky and the Yarraman (Bronco) to life.
